Women
North Carolina is going to start avoiding Blacksburg, VA like the plague. For the second straight time, the #7 Tar Heels traveled to Virginia and lost to an unranked Virginia Tech Hokies team. Kelly Conheeney scored the game’s lone goal in the 50th minute to secure the win, give Va Tech their fourth victory in five games, and push them into the Top 25. Washington State, Florida, William & Mary, and Milwaukee were the other top teams who lost to unranked opponents this week.

Others were close, but came away with a point. #2 OK State played Texas A & M to a scoreless tie in front of nearly 2,500 fans, and #22 Auburn played a scoreless stalemate against Georgia.
Penn State secured a remarkable 14th straight Big Ten title this week with a 4-0 win over Michigan and a 3-1 victory over Michigan State. Maya Hayes had two goals, and Ali Schaefer had a goal and an assist for the Nittany Lions against Michigan, while Hayes added two more tallies vs. Sparty.
Stanford put up eight goals in two victories this week, and Lindsay Taylor had four of them, giving her 14 for the season! Her teammate Chioma Ubogagu added a goal and three assists. A little further down US 1, UCLA’s Sydney Leroux had three goals in a 6-1 drubbing of PAC-12 rival Arizona.
Men
The shift was on at the top of the NCAA Division I men’s soccer rankings this week. Former #1 UConn and perennial power North Carolina both went winless this week with a loss and a tie, which opened the door for new top-ranked team Maryland. New Mexico, the only unbeaten team remaining in the Top 25, moved to 4th with a 13-0-2 mark after a 2-0 win over Cal-Bakersfield, and Creighton rounded out the top five.
Locally, St. John’s drops to #11 in the national rankings with a 10-4-2 record after a loss to unranked Villanova, and Fordham made some noise with a 1-0 upset win over #14 Charlotte.
Among the other upsets of note were Wisconsin, who lost to Northwestern, and #7 UCLA’s defeat at the hands of unranked Cal-Northridge.
Other games of note included #17 Old Dominion’s 4-1 win over Hofstra, which featured three assists by Tim Hopkinson. #19 BC needed a goal from Charlie Rugg in the 107th minute to dispatch Duke. Akron, who is ranked #4, got three goals and an assist from Darren Mattocks in a 5-2 win over Buffalo
