Yesterday we told you about the four teams competing in the semi-finals of the Women’s College Cup. The men’s
tournament enters the quarterfinals this weekend with three games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
But first a quick look back at third round action. Charlotte (with a 1-0 win over Akron) and St. Mary’s (3-2 winners over Brown) were the only two unranked teams to advance to the quarters, while #12 Louisville upended #5 Maryland, 4-2 on the back of Colin Rolfe’s one goal and three assists. #7 USF needed penalty kicks to dispatch unranked New Mexico, and top seed North Carolina squeaked past #16 Indiana, 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Billy Schuler in the 97th minute.
The tournament’s top three seeds have advanced to this weekend’s games. The Tar Heels will host St. Mary’s, #2 Creighton plays USF, #3 UConn will play host to Charlotte, and Louisville gets #13 UCLA in what promises to be one of the more intriguing games of the weekend. The Bruins were 3-0 winners over Rutgers last weekend.
