Women
The top of the women’s Division I Top 25 remained unchanged this week as Stanford and Oklahoma State remained in the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. However, there was some jockeying for position below them as UCLA, Wake Forest, and Memphis were all on the rise, moving into the #3 through #5 spots.

As always, there were upsets this week that made an impact on the soccer landscape as well. #10 Maryland lost 2-1 to unranked Miami (FL), Mississippi State topped #15 Florida, 2-1, and #11 Florida State dispatched #4 Boston College, 1-0 on a goal in the 84th minute.

In other games of note, Wake and #9 UNC played to a scoreless tie, while Marquette got two goals and an assist from Maegan Kelly in a 4-0 drubbing of Syracuse. Maya Hayes put up similar numbers for Penn State, and teammates Taylor Schram (2 goals) and Emily Hurd (2 assists) chipped in as well in a Big Ten win over Iowa. All three girls put up points earlier in the week in a 5-4 win over Nebraska.

The offensive outburst of the week came from Boston University, who put up eight goals against UMBC, lead by Tiya Gallegos’ goal and two assists. Megan McGoldrick had two goals and Ana Cuffia added two assists for the Terriers.

While Stanford got by Arizona State, 3-1, OK State needed a goal in the 57th minute to pull out a tie vs. Texas after giving up a score in the opening minutes. Auburn’s Ana Cate had a goal and an assist in her team’s 3-1 win over #18 LSU, and UNC scored a huge win, defeating rival #3 Duke during the week.

Men
Upsets were the storyline of the week in the men’s game, and none was bigger than No. 1 Connecticut’s first loss of the season. The Huskies dropped a 2-0 decision to West Virginia in front of over 1,700 fans in Morgantown. UConn put just five shots on goal and gave up more than a single goal for the first time in three years.

Out in the Big Ten, Michigan added some light to a frustrating season that has included eight single goal losses and three defeats in OT with a 1-0 win over defending Men’s College Cup champion Akron. The team met in last year’s semi-finals, and the Wolverine’s victory ended a13-game unbeaten streak for the Zips this season.

However, the biggest upset of the week (and maybe the season) clearly goes to Wildcats of Davidson, who toppled #2 UNC 1-0 in front of a home crowd of nearly 2,000. Jake Keator’s goal in the 82nd minute was the difference in a contest that saw the Tar Heels outshoot their opponent, 16-3. But keeper Chip Sanders made seven saves to record his career high seventh shutout of the season. It was just the Wildcats second win in seven games, and for the Heels, their first loss in 10 matches.
